Women’s Golf at Federal

SUPPORTING WOMEN IN GOLF (SWING)

Calling all women in Canberra! Federal Golf Club welcomes you to experience golf.

Never played? Never considered golf? Have you ever thought of anything worse? Don’t worry. Federal’s Supporting Women in Golf (SWinG) program is the perfect opportunity to get your friends together and give golf a go.

Careful though, you might just surprise yourself and love it!

SWinG meets on Monday mornings with clinics held on at least 2 Mondays per month at 8:30am and 9:30am with opportunity to play a few holes after the clinic.

On the alternate Mondays we meet to play 9 holes, or just a few holes, depending on experience and skill level.

We have volunteers to accompany less experienced golfers and to help with rules of golf and etiquette.

These sessions are also ideal for obtaining a handicap card and to meet other golfers

To give golf a try, contact PGA Professional Phil Mackay via e-mail – pmackay@pgamember.org.au

Clinics:

Cost: Non members: $30 per 50-minute session, Members:  $20 per 50-minute session

Message of Welcome from the Women’s President

As the current President of the Women’s Committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to anyone considering joining us at Federal.

Federal Golf Club offers women an opportunity to learn or further develop their skill in playing the game of golf on a first class golf course in a friendly and supportive environment.

For women wanting to learn the game of golf, Federal provides the opportunity for new players to learn the basics and etiquette of golf in our SWinG (Supporting Women in Golf) Program, which is held on Mondays. Women are supported by experienced members of the Club while they progress towards obtaining their handicap.

For women with a handicap, there is a regular Women’s Competition on Tuesdays, but women can also play in the mixed competitions on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Club also has times available for social play on most days.

For those who are unable to commit to full 18 hole competitions, the club offers regular 9 hole competitions.

Apart from the golfing experience, Federal Golf Club also provides members and their guests with an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful facilities and to participate in the regular informal social events that are scheduled during the year.

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to our Club.

Cora Zyp

President of the Women’s Committee

MESSAGE OF WELCOME FROM THE WOMEN’S CAPTAIN

At Federal, women members are equal participants in all areas of the Club’s activities. We take diversity and inclusion seriously. Anne Brown was elected at the end of last year as Vice-President of Federal’s Board of Governors, having previously served as a Board member. Janet Compton was also elected to the Board. Tania Maxwell was elected as the Club’s Vice-Captain and also as the Women’s Committee Vice-Captain. We are proud to have these women in senior governing positions and we encourage more women to stand for election in the future.

The age of female participation in regular competitions ranges from 15 to 95! We cater for all ages and all levels of golfing ability, from beginners who are encouraged through our junior’s program and the Supporting Women in Golf (SWinG) group, to our top Division 1 players who made it to the Bruce Cup Pennants final in 2019.  We are proud of them all. We encourage fitness, fun and a great spirit of competition.

The women’s competition is played on Tuesdays with a field of 60 to 70. We have a varied program with a mix of stroke, stableford, par and team games. The Friday and Sunday competitions are medley competitions with around 30-40 women playing. The Saturday group is usually smaller but growing. Several mixed competitions are also played throughout the year.

Federal women participate in a range of yearly club competitions as well as District, State and Golf Australia events. We enter teams in all the District Pennant competitions and play regular interclub matches with four other GolfNSW clubs. Many women also travel and play together at other clubs.

Our 9-hole membership provides a fabulous option for members who are new to golf, as a stepping stone for those who have taken advantage of our SWinG group, or those who prefer the shorter, less time consuming game. There are 9-hole competitions available on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

I strongly encourage anyone thinking of joining a golf club in Canberra or taking up golf, to come and play a few rounds at Federal or join the SWinG group on Mondays.
